The Cassini star globe

Giovanni Maria Cassini lived mainly in Rome from 1750 to about 1824 and was one of the great Italian cartographers. His Earth Atlas of 1792 was at the cutting edge of science and already included the results of James Cook's voyages of discovery. The celestial atlas from the same year took into account the star catalogues of Flamsteed and de la Caille and was thus up to date with astronomy. The atlas also included segments, along with hints on how to make a globe from them that was about 34 cm in diameter, larger than this version.

The Cassini Star Globe is a decorative and informative star globe from a time when great value was placed on artistic design, even in highly scientific publications.
