The Galileo thermometer
In a glass flask filled with liquid, there are floating bodies of the same size but different weights and thus also different densities: in this case, glass spheres. When the liquid warms up, it expands and thus reduces its density. The balls with higher weight (higher density) sink to the bottom. When the liquid cools down, it contracts and its density increases. Now the coloured glass balls rise to the top again. The degree labels hanging on the glass balls tell the observer the temperature to an accuracy of 1°. An instructive and practical instrument, a beautiful room decoration and a successful gift.
Note: The Galileo thermometer is made of glass with an oil-alcohol mixture sealed inside. Therefore it is not a toy for children.
